Great Plains Network and Greater Western Library Alliance annual meeting coming up in Kansas City

Submitted by Tony Ballard

The annual meeting of the Great Plains Network and the Greater Western Library Alliance will be May 31-June 2 at the InterContinental Hotel on the Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri.

K-State is a member institution of both entities and K-State Global Campus provides planning and logistical support for the meeting. Greg Monaco, research associate professor of psychological sciences at K-State, is Great Plains Network's director for research and cyberinfrastructure initiatives.

The Great Plains Network consortium will be celebrating 20 years of advanced networking for research and education. K-State is a charter member of the Great Plains Network. To celebrate the anniversary, a series of events are planned that are of potential interest to K-State researchers, faculty, library scientists and IT specialists.

The meeting will commence with a Big Data Summit at 1 p.m. on May 31. The summit will feature noted speakers Cliff Lynch, executive director of the Coalition for Networked Information, and John Towns, executive director of the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment. The summit is free to attend, but requires advance registration.

The Center for Open Science will present a free, hands-on workshop on the Open Science Framework from 1:30-4:30 p.m. on June 1 for faculty, graduate students and postdocs across all disciplines in experimental and quantitative science and research. The workshop will focus on Project Documentation, Version Control, Pre-Analysis Plans, and Open Source Tools to easily implement these concepts in a scientific workflow. The workshop does not require any specialized knowledge of programming. Participants will gain a foundation for incorporating reproducible, transparent practices into their current workflows. This workshop is free, but requires advance registration.

The annual meeting will be June 1-2, and will feature addresses by Jim Bottum of Internet2, Rachel Merlo of Google, and Bob Bennett, chief innovation officer for Kansas City, Missouri.
