Submit nominations for Celebrating Service and Leadership Awards

Submitted by Anahi Arce-Gross

Each year, the K-State Staley School of Leadership Studies honors Leadership Studies students, community partners, and special individuals who have volunteered their time and leadership working to enhance, improve and impact the greater good of the campus and community.

In recognition of the power of volunteers to spark change and improve the world through community, the Celebrating Service and Leadership Community Service Awards are modeled after the Daily Point of Light Award, created by the administration of President George H.W. Bush. These awards embrace the challenge of tackling a community need through volunteer service. The Staley School of Leadership Studies recognizes that volunteering and community service can lead to increased civic involvement and leadership, not only for college students but for youth and community members.

To submit a nomination, complete the online form based on the criteria provided and submit it electronically to HandsOn Kansas State at handson@k-state.edu by noon April 5. Honorees will be notified by Monday, April 10, with the expectation they will be attending the Staley School of Leadership Studies' Celebrating Service and Leadership recognition event on Sunday, April 23, at the Leadership Studies Building.

Honorees are evaluated against the following criteria. Does the volunteer or service work:

  1. Meet a community need?
  2. Demonstrate specific impact?
  3. Lasts beyond a semester and has the capacity to be sustained?
  4. Reflect innovative or unique approaches?

One honoree will be selected for each of the following categories:

They are committed to involving others in service and activism, have effectively mobilized a large and diverse population on campus to address an issue of importance in the community

Outstanding Community Service Partner: A community service partner from the greater Manhattan area that has served to meet a community need, and has been active with HandsOn Kansas State during the 2015-2016 academic year. Successful candidates also will have engaged in creative utilization of people, resources and opportunities while exercising leadership and advocating for positive change in their community.
