If you've ever worried about unintentionally misusing copyrighted material, let K-State Libraries' Center for the Advancement of Digital Scholarship, or CADS, take you from copyright anxious to copyright confident. Whether you're planning a class or working on a scholarly article, thesis or dissertation, you're invited to attend any — or all — of the center's copyright workshops in 407 Hale Library.

• Fair Use, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22: If you've ever hesitated to use copyrighted works, fair use could be your new best friend. Learn four factors of fair use and how they apply to instruction and scholarly activities. You'll also discover the Fair Use Evaluator Tool, which can help you evaluate your use and produce a PDF for your records.

• Creative Commons Licensing, 3-4 p.m. Thursday, March 30: Come find works with Creative Commons, or CC, licenses that can be reused and remixed, and then discuss how to apply a license to your own scholarly works, blog posts, videos, photos, music and more.

• Analyzing Any U.S. Copyright Problem, 3-4 p.m. Tuesday, April 25: Do you find yourself hesitant to use others' content in your own work? Learn how to tackle any U.S. copyright problem effectively and pragmatically by following four simple steps. You'll learn the basics of copyright, exemptions that allow for certain educational and scholarly uses, how to carefully construct a permission letter, how to find collective rights agencies and the scenarios for when each of these approaches is appropriate and necessary.

This workshop is presented by CADS. CADS promotes and enhances education, instruction and consultation on copyright, fair use, author rights and other intellectual property issues. Please note that these sessions will not provide legal advice.
