Calling for respectful engagement and dialogue

Submitted by Annie Jewell

Recently, Student Body President Jessica Van Ranken and Student Body Vice President Trenton Kennedy were made aware of certain postelection incidents on campus that do not align with our Principles of Community at Kansas State. We call on our peers to engage with each other in a way that lives up to those principles and the standards of our University.

As a K-State family, respectful engagement and open dialogue on tough issues are of critical importance, as is ensuring we maintain an inclusive and welcoming environment. We know as Wildcats, that when we work together, through our differences, to solve tough issues, we accomplish much. Respect, open dialogue, compassion, and empathy are all foundational to this vision.

One of the Principles of Community states, "we affirm the right of each person to freely express thoughts and opinions in a spirit of civility and decency. We believe that diversity of views enriches our learning environment, and we promote open expression within a climate of courtesy, sensitivity, and mutual respect."
