Wetzel invited lecturer at international research conference

Submitted by David Wetzel

David Wetzel, professor of grain science and industry, was an invited lecturer on the subject of "Quantitative Chemical Imaging via Near IR: Progress, Technology, and Application to Complex Mixtures of Solids that Result from Processing Plant Material" at the 18th International Diffuse Reflectance Conference July 30-Aug. 5 at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.

Wetzel has served as president of the Council for Near Infrared Spectroscopy, the sponsor of the biennial conference. He also organized and directed an earlier diffuse reflectance summer research conference when that new analytical chemical technology field was just emerging.

The focus of this talk was the application of our 21st century analytical technology to determine the purity of flour milling streams on a chemical basis as percent endosperm. For the past 150 years, the quality of wheat flour streams was expressed in terms of impurity.
