National 4-H Week student feature: Kate Hagans

For all members, present and past, 4-H will always hold a special place in their hearts. For these 4-H alumni, the program gave them important life skills that they plan to use for many years to come. Join K-State Research and Extension this week as we profile current students at Kansas State University who are former 4-H members, in celebration of National 4-H Week, Oct. 4-10.

Kate Hagans, Utica, Kansas, Walnut Creek Extension District

Hagans grew up in a small town with big dreams. As a senior in agricultural communications and journalism at K-State, she uses the talents she gained as a 14-year member of the Shields Jayhawk 4-H Club to make her best even better. Projects, such as citizenship, beef, arts and crafts, and photography, helped her gain knowledge and skills that she continues to use as she strives to represent our state's beef industry and pursue her dream job, which is working as a communications specialist for a livestock or breed association.

"I've met some great people along the way," Hagans says. "These people have believed in me and never left, no matter how stubborn I was. Because of them, my motivation and my hunger for success, I am making a spot for myself in the professional industry. Because of 4-H, I have been fortunate enough to pay for my education through financial savings and scholarship opportunities. The personal values I learned in 4-H — patience, determination, the drive to achieve and caring for others — will always be a part of who I am and have shaped me to be the best person I can be."
