Tree Campus USA: 2015 social media challenge winners announced

Submitted by Cathie Lavis

From Wednesday, April 22, to Friday, April 24, you might have noticed some of the tree fact signs posted near a number of spectacular trees on our K-State campus along with a couple stations in which students were displaying tree specimens and offering information about trees.

You might have even noticed students using ropes and a harness to climb trees in the Waters Hall quad. This fun activity really has an important goal in the urban environment; the climber prunes the tree to help improve structure, resulting in a safer tree.

These various activities were done to celebrate Arbor Day and the fact that K-State is a Tree Campus USA. To maintain that status, we must promote trees and their benefits and demonstrate a dedicated program for maintaining our trees.

Another part of three-day celebration was a social media challenge in which individuals were challenged to spread the message of Tree Campus USA, and show support for the appreciation and good care of the trees that we have here on campus. This social media challenge was orchestrated by Cody Holliday, sophomore in agricultural education and a College of Agriculture student ambassador.

The individuals who participated in that challenge had their names put in a hat and drawn in order to win a Tree Campus USA cap. The winners of that challenge were Addie Wassenberg, a senior in horticulture, and Melissa Poet, a sophomore agricultural education.

Congratulations to those students and big thank you to the K-State administration, faculty, staff and students who help to take such good care of our campus trees and help provide a beautiful campus on which to achieve our academic endeavors.
