Submitted by Ryan Haxton

On April 19, the Staley School of Leadership Studies hosted its annual Celebrating Service and Leadership event. The event honors those who have demonstrated exceptional service, leadership and civic engagement at K-State, in the Manhattan community, and beyond.

Several students were recognized for their leadership in the Staley School and the community. Three students received the Pat J. Bosco Leadership Studies Outstanding Graduating Senior Award: Kara Cavalli, senior in family studies and human services, from Lincoln; Autumn Snesrud, senior in secondary education, from Iola; Brady Armstrong, senior in economics and psychology, from Olathe.

Receiving the Nonprofit Leadership Outstanding Graduating Senior Award for academic and leadership excellence in the nonprofit leadership focus is Shandell Gallardo, senior in public relations and advertising, from Garden City. Receiving the Outstanding Civic Engagement Award for excellence in community engagement and strong commitment to service is Daniel Ecklund, senior in operations and chain supply management, from Overland Park, and Tyler Bedell, senior in business marketing, from Liberty, Missouri.

In an effort to recognize K-State and Manhattan service partners, the Outstanding Community Service Award is designed to honor individuals and groups who have contributed to the greater Manhattan community through their service and leadership. The Outstanding Service Champion is awarded to Marianne Cullers, Manhattan, for her dedication in volunteerism and service to meet a community need. Cullers is the co-founder of the free tutoring and homework assistance program called Hand to Hand, and she has worked for years with high-risk K-12 students at the Douglass Center Annex.

Kaden Littrell, freshman in business administration from Canton, is recognized as the Outstanding K-State Student Volunteer for his work with service projects such as the Acacia Claus Toy Drive and the Escape the Box advocacy project.

Receiving the Outstanding K-State Student Organization is the First Scholars Program for its dedication to service and participation in both the Cats for Cans service project and Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service where members worked with Restore through Habitat for Humanity. Receiving the Outstanding Community Service Partner award is Harvesters Community Food Network for its work to recognize the hidden hunger that exists among our college students and help establish ongoing mobile food distributions on campus at K-State.

Manhattan High School senior Alyssa Frey was awarded the President's Volunteer Service Award in connection with HandsOn Kansas State through the Staley School of Leadership Studies. Frey was selected for this award because of her community engagement and dedication to service in Manhattan.

To conclude the night, Diana Chapel of Ogden was awarded the Susan M. Scott Community Leadership Award for her years of dedication to passionate service and leadership that she has contributed as an active and engaged member of the Ogden and Manhattan communities. The Susan M. Scott Community Leadership Award was established in Susan Scott's name to recognize and celebrate her leadership as the founding director of leadership studies. The award is given to recipients who demonstrate leadership focused on bringing progressive change to communities.
