Campus Creek cleanup, fish signs installed

Submitted by Casey Pennock

Installed signs by the Quinlan Nature Area Bridge

On March 29, members of the K-State student chapters of the American Fisheries Society, The Wildlife Society, and the Wildlife and Outdoor Enterprise Management Club cleaned up trash at Campus Creek.

Members also installed two signs featuring fish species that call Campus Creek home. A sign is located by the stone bridge east of the Leadership Studies Building, and another by the bridge in the Quinlan Nature Area. The signs were sponsored by the Fisheries Society and the Academic Excellence Fund provided by the Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President.

They feature illustrations by renowned fish illustrator and Kansan, Joseph R. Tomelleri. The signs are meant to encourage students to take pride in our natural resources on campus and to appreciate the beautiful organisms that exist in an urban stream like Campus Creek. They also highlight some species, such as the goldfish and common carp, that have been illegally introduced to the creek, most likely through releases into Jardine Pond.
