Get ready to celebrate the 2014 International Education Week

The 2014 International Education Week presents exciting opportunities to learn more about the 2,247 international students at K-State this fall as well as recognizing this important week of cultural diversity. We invite and encourage you to participate in the array of festivities next week.

The Office of International Programs is partnering with the Union Program Council and Barb DeSanto's Public Relations Writing class. The class is actively promoting the events on social media for class credit. One of the students, Lauren Holtmeier created a wordle to represent International Education Week

Sunday, Nov. 16: 5:30 p.m., International Food Festival featuring global cuisine at Jardine Apartments' Frith Community Center, presented by the International Coordinating Council. Email nurlmardiyati@k-state.edu for ticket information.

Monday, Nov. 17: "The Many Worlds of International" will highlight global treasures in K-State Student Union display cases by Cats' Den and William T. Kemper Art Gallery.

Tuesday, Nov. 18: 5-6:30 p.m., K-State International Awards Reception in the Tadtman Boardroom at the Alumni Center. Provost April Mason will make remarks and recognize each winner.

  • The International Educator of the Year Award will be presented to Mo Hosni, professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering, for making significant contributions to advancing international education at Kansas State University.
  • The Innovative Educator of the Year Award will be presented to Centro Studi Citta di Orvieto, Orvieto, Italy for its partnership with K-State to elevate international awareness. Serena Croce from Italy will accept the award and is available to meet with faculty and students interested in exploring international abroad options in Orvieto.
  • The Outstanding Support for International Initiatives Award, will be given by the Office of International Programs leadership team to the College of Architecture Planning & Design for expanding international opportunities for our student body.

Wednesday, Nov. 19: 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Office of International Programs International Education Week Fair in the Union on the first floor by the food court. Many K-State departments and organizations will sponsor tables featuring activities that promote and celebrate international awareness.  At 5 p.m., meet K-State international athletes in Room 227 at the Union. Dane Steen from Jamaica, Zanri Van der Merwe from South Africa, Tegan Louw from South Africa and the U.K., and Livia Cirnu from Romania will talk about food, culture, experiences from their countries, as well as their impressions of Kansas State. Shawna Jordan, assistant professor, athletic training education program director and assistant dean for student support will moderate the discussion.

Thursday, Nov. 20: 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Vernon Larson Lecture: "How International is Kansas State?" featuring K-State's  John Leslie, Marcelo Sabates and Lynn Ewanow in the Hemisphere Room of Hale Library.
At 6:30 p.m., explore cultural differences through drama at the International Student Center. Everyone experiences culture shock when moving to a new place. But how do you move forward through the shock to a deeper understanding? This workshop will provide an enjoyable way to learn more about adjusting to U.S. culture. Share your stories and have fun problem solving through role play, drama games and discussion. Facilitated by Jessica Munoz, master's student in drama therapy.
