Several students from the geography department were recognized for research excellence at the recent joint regional meeting of the Southwest and Great Plains/Rocky Mountain Divisions of the Association of American Geographers, Oct. 23-25, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

In graduate-level competitions, William Wetherholt earned first place in the student paper category for his presentation, "Exploring Place Attachment in Kansas' Central Great Plains: A Jewell County Pilot Study." Nick Patch and Thomas Larsen finished in a first place tie in the poster division. Patch presented "Variables Affecting Meander Bend Migration of a Regulated Stream, Kansas River, USA" and Larsen illustrated "Local Perceptions of Power and Controversy in the Management of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways."

At the undergraduate level, Megan McHaney received second place for her poster "Spatiotemporal Analysis of Growing Season Length and Freeze Dates as a Measure of Climate Change for Agricultural Producers in Kansas."

With these honors, K-State geography students have continued a long tradition of successfully competing for a number of prestigious national scholarships, academic programs, and professional organization awards. See a chronology of major student awards and honors.
