Geography faculty, students present at regional conference

Faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students from the geography department participated in the annual 2014 Joint Meeting of the Southwest and Great Plains-Rocky Mountain Divisions of the Association of American Geographers, Oct. 23-25, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. 

J.M. Shawn Hutchinson, associate professor, served as conference co-organizer.

The following faculty and students made presentations at the meetings:  

Matt DeCapo, graduate student, presented "Comparative Analysis of Waste Management at Kansas State University and the University of Ghana, Legon."

Brandon H. Haddock, graduate student, presented "Beyond the Ma and Pa:  Navigating Rural Sexuality and Gender Identification Networks."

 John A. Harrington Jr., professor; Caitlin Dye, undergraduate student; and colleague Ian Howard presented "Understanding Variations in Precipitation Seasonality in Kansas."

J.M. Shawn Hutchinson, associate professor, and colleagues Anne Jacquin, Stacy L. Hutchinson and Jan Verbesselt presented "Monitoring Inter- and Intra-Annual Vegetation Dynamics on U.S. Army Training Lands using MODIS Composite Imagery and Temporal Decomposition Methods."

Thomas B. Larsen, graduate student, presented "Spreading It Faster than We can Shovel It: Local Perceptions of Power and Controversy in the Management of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways."

Megan McHaney, undergraduate student; J.M. Shawn Hutchinson, associate professor; and colleague Anandhi Swamy presented "Spatiotemporal Analysis of Growing Season Length and Freeze Dates as a Measure of Climate Change for Agricultural Producers in Kansas."

Nickolas L. Patch, graduate student, presented "Variables Affecting Meander Bend Migration of a Regulated Stream, Kansas River, USA."

Bimal Paul, professor, presented "Internal Migration in Bangladesh:  A Comparative Study of Coastal, Environmentally Challenged and Other Districts."

Avantika Ramekar, graduate student, presented "Access to Emergency Healthcare in Wyandotte County, Kansas, 2010."

Lianling Su, graduate student, and J.M. Shawn Hutchinson, associate professor, presented "Engaging Agricultural Stakeholders and Communicating Climate Change Risk with a WebGIS-based Crop Calendar."

Laura Wallace, graduate student, and Lisa M.B. Harrington, professor, presented "Condit Dam Removal, Washington: Perceptions and Decision-Making."

William Wetherholt, graduate student, presented "Exploring Place Attachment in Kansas’ Central Great Plains: A Jewell County Pilot Study."
