Fellowships for women, deadline Nov. 15

Submitted by Barbara Gatewood

Applications are now being accepted for the 2015-16 American Association of University Women American Fellowships for women pursuing full-time study to complete dissertations, conducting postdoctoral research full time, or preparing research for publication for eight consecutive weeks.

The American Fellowship program has been in existence since 1881, making it the oldest noninstitutional source of graduate funding for women in the United States. Award amounts are $6,000-$30,000 and the application deadline is Nov. 15. Apply online.

The award categories are:

• American Dissertation Fellowships, $20,000, provides one-year support to offset a women scholar’s living expenses in the final year of dissertation writing with an expected completion date between April 1-June 30, 2016.

• American Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowships, $30,000, provides assistance to women faculty in obtaining tenure and further promotion by enabling them to spend a year pursuing independent research. Its purpose is to increase the number of women in tenure-track faculty positions and to promote equity for women in higher education.

• American Summer/Short-Term Research Publication Grant, $6,000, provides eight weeks of support to women scholars to prepare research manuscripts for publication. These grants can be awarded to both tenure-track and part-time faculty, and new and established researchers. The grants are designed to assist the candidate in obtaining tenure and other promotion.

American Association of University Women is a nationwide community with more than 170,000 members and supporters, 1,000 local branches, and 800 college university partners. The association’s mission is to advance the equality for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. As a global leader in providing educational, professional and economic opportunities for women, the association awards about $4 million annually in fellowships and grants.

Other upcoming funding opportunities through the association include International Fellowships, deadline is Dec. 1; Career Development Grants, deadline is Dec. 15; Selected Professions Fellowships, deadline is Jan. 10, 2015; and Community Action Grants, deadline is Jan. 15, 2015.
