Ecologist from Federal University of Goias, Brazil, to speak Oct. 2

Paulo de Marco, associate professor of ecology and evolution at Federal University of Goias, Brazil, will present a lecture about the challenge of evaluating the vulnerability of threatened species from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in 324 Ackert Hall.

De Marco graduated with a bachelor's degree in biological sciences from the Federal University of Minas Gerais in 1988. He has a master's degree in ecology from the University of Campinas and a doctorate in ecology from the University of Campinas. He is an advisor in evolution and ecology and environmental sciences graduate courses.

His research is in ecology and theoretical ecology including community ecology, population ecology, conservation biology and quantitative ecology. De Marco has served as a leading investigator in many projects studying the biodiversity of the Brazilian Savanna.

He is an editorial board member of the Neotropical Biology and Conservation journal. He has published more than 100 papers in journals such as Ecological Modelling, Ecological Indicators, Biological Conservation, Land Use Policy and Journal of Biogeography.

Marcellus Caldas, international programs office director of faculty research and collaborations, is de Marco's host and Mark Ungerer, associate professor in evolutionary and ecological genetics in plants, genome structure and evolution, coordinated the seminar.
