Oct. 4 K-State Fighting for a Cure shirt day building steam

Submitted by Marcia Locke

K-State fans are encouraged to show their pride in the university's fight against cancer and celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month by wearing the K-State Fighting for a Cure shirt to the home football game and elsewhere on Oct. 4.

First lady of K-State football Sharon Snyder, university president and first lady Kirk and Noel Schulz, and many others will participate in the celebration. Hundreds of shirts have been sold in the past few weeks.

"We're very excited to learn that the Pride of Wildcat Land Marching Band will even do a special breast cancer awareness formation during halftime," said Marcia Locke, communications and outreach coordinator for the university's Johnson Cancer Research Center.

Shirt sales benefit the cancer research center, which directs hundreds of thousands of dollars in private gifts every year to the university's most promising cancer research projects and student researchers.

The shirts are purple with a pink Powercat, pink ribbons and the phrase, "Fighting Ever Fighting for a Cure," inspired by the K-State fight song, "Wildcat Victory." They are $20 and available in unisex, ladies' and youth styles.

They can be purchased at the cancer research center, 1 Chalmers Hall, and online through its Web store, sponsored by N Zone. It is accessible on the center's website. Please place order by Sept. 26 for shipping by Oct. 3.

The shirts also are available for the same price at Varney's stores and online. Varney's is donating $5 per shirt to the center and has raised more than $2,000 so far.

The K-State Cancer Fighters student organization also will sell shirts at the K-State Student Union from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25.

A three-week social media campaign kicked off Sept. 15 with a photo of Bill Snyder, K-State head football coach and member of the cancer research center's advisory council. Supporters are encouraged to share the posts and to post photos of themselves wearing the shirt along with the hashtag #HelpKStateFightCancer.

The Johnson Cancer Research Center helps fund and advance cancer research and education at K-State. Its programs are made possible by private donations. Information about the center can be obtained by calling 785-532-6705 or visiting its website.
