Prairie Analysis Seminar Sept. 27-28
Several leading experts on differential equations and applications will be featured speakers at the 12th annual Prairie Analysis Seminar at Kansas State University.
The conference, which is free and open to the public, starts at noon Friday, Sept. 27, and continues all day Saturday, Sept. 28, in 103 Cardwell Hall. It is sponsored by the mathematics departments of K-State and the University of Kansas. The meeting is supported by a grant by the National Science Foundation and by K-State's Isidore and Hilda Dressler Endowment for the Enrichment of Mathematics.
The seminar will feature two one-hour talks by Gui-Qiang Chen, professor at the University of Oxford, England. Also presenting one-hour talks will be Mihail Feldman, professor at the University of Wisconsin; Augusto Ponce, professor at the Universite catholique de Louvain, Belgium; and Monica Torres, professor at Purdue University.
The speakers will focus on recent advances in the study of mixed-type differential equations. These types of equations include nonlinear diffusion-convection equations and transonic flow equations in fluid mechanics. The talks will emphasize the development of unified mathematical approaches, ideas and techniques to deal with mixed-type problems.
In addition, about 20 shorter talks will be given by mathematicians from across the U.S. and Canada. Conference organizers Marianne Korten, professor of mathematics at Kansas State University; Charles Moore, professor of mathematics at Washington State University; Estela Gavosto and Rodolfo Torres, professor of mathematics at University of Kansas; received a grant from the National Science Foundation for the seminar series from 2009-2013. The conference alternates annually between Kansas State University and University of Kansas.
