Teaching the teachers: K-State Olathe hosts 20 Kansas educators for food safety and security instruction at summer in-service

In partnership with One Health Kansas, K-State Olathe will present a summer teacher in-service this week.

The in-service will prepare 20 Kansas teachers to educate high school students about future health challenges and careers related to zoonotic infectious disease, food safety and security, and food science through existing units and/or courses in biology, chemistry, life science, environmental science, and career and technical education agriculture, health, biochemistry and biomedical pathways.

Secondary biology, chemistry, life science, environmental science, FACS, and career and technical education agriculture and biochemistry pathways teachers will be in attendance from across the state.

In addition to several speakers from industry in the Kansas City metro area, featured speakers from K-State will include:

  • Nigel Harper, Biosecurity Research Institute
  • Rhonda Jahnke, horticulture, forestry and recreation services department
  • Brenee King, human nutrition department
  • Joan Leavens, Urban Water Institute, K-State Olathe
  • Sabine Martin, agronomy department
  • Beth Montelone, One Health Kansas
  • Abbey Nutsch,  animal sciences and industry department
  • Dana Reinert, K-State Olathe
  • Bryan Severns, K-State Olathe
  • Jackie Spears, College of Education, K-State Olathe
  • Micheal Strohschein, K-State Olathe
  • Marianne Swaney-Stueve, Sensory and Consumer Research Center, K-State Olathe
