The Meadow at the Beach Museum to be planted June 17
The Meadow of native plants is planned for the open space behind the Beach Museum of Art. Volunteers will broadcast seed on June 17, weather permitting.
The creation of The Meadow on the K-State campus will foster:
- a demonstration of sustainable landscaping that requires less watering and pesticide use than conventional lawns
- a natural laboratory for a variety of both graduate and undergraduate research projects
- a resource for the teaching of plant identification and native plants establishment
- an experiential component for Beach Museum tours, allowing tour groups to examine, touch and smell some of the plants depicted in landscape art displayed in the museum's galleries
- an extension of the work of museum educators and faculty across campus to make meaningful connections among art, science and enjoyment of the natural world.
Project planning began in October 2011. The Meadow planning and design team includes faculty and staff from the College of Architecture, Planning and Design; Beach Museum of Art; College of Arts and Sciences; College of Agriculture; and the College of Engineering.
The Meadow installation is generously sponsored by the Hummel family in memory of Professor William C. Hummel and Sara T. Hummel.
