Student industrial engineering video wins national competition

Submitted by Tina Long

Kansas State University's Institute of Industrial Engineers, or IIE, chapter has been awarded first place and a $1,000 grant for its student-produced video submission "Choose My Major."

Aimed at recruiting high school students, the video provides an overview of industrial engineering, highlights industries where they are employed and the types of work industrial engineers do every day. K-State's submission completed against the institute chapters across the nation and will honored at the institute's annual conference, May 18-22, in Sun Juan, Puerto Rico.

"Our students are very enthusiastic about their choice of industrial engineering as a major," said Malgorzata Rys, associate professor in the industrial and manufacturing systems engineering department and faculty advisor for the group. "Through this video they hope to introduce others to the profession and increase the number of students pursuing an industrial engineering at K-State."

A senior industrial engineering student, Carl Specht, Overland Park, directed and edited the video with help from his classmates: Jordan Bever, senior, Hutchinson; Victor Cassone, senior, Overland Park; and Andrew Waldman, senior, Shawnee. Lending a hand in the production was Hannah Foil, senior, elementary education, Overland Park.

The video can be viewed at online.
