Vernon Larson International Lecture: Laszlo Kulcsar to present "The roller coaster of immigrant integration: Mexicans, Somalis and the public discourse in Emporia"

Submitted by Kathleen Witcher

The campus is invited to join the Friends of International Programs for the Vernon Larson International Lecture-Luncheon Series on Tuesday, March 15. This event will be the fifth of six monthly lectures this school year to celebrate 31 years of the international lecture series that highlights the deep commitment to the internationalization of K-State, Manhattan, and the State of Kansas; as well as the contributions of Kansans and K-Staters to the world.

The free lecture begins at 12:15 p.m. at the Holiday Inn at the campus, 1641 Anderson Ave. The speaker is Laszlo Kulcsar, who will present  "The roller coaster of immigrant integration:  Mexicans, Somalis, and the public discourse in Emporia."

Immigrant integration is driven by federal and state policies, however it occurs at local places. Not all places are prepared to take a relatively large number of immigrants, and this is especially true for small towns across the Midwest. The case of Emporia reveals the dynamics of local public discourse about immigrant integration and highlights some of the challenges of refugee resettlement.
