Parker performs at Society for American Music conference

Submitted by Craig B. Parker

On March 9, Craig B. Parker, music, was director of and solo cornetist with the SAM Brass Band in a concert at the annual Society for American Music conference in Little Rock, Ark.

This was the 22nd time that this band has played at the society's conferences. This ensemble performed a variety of late 19th- and early 20th-century pieces for brass band, including music by some of the most important figures in the band world at that time, such as Herbert L. Clarke, Patrick Gilmore, Scott Joplin, Karl L. King, Arthur Pryor and John Philip Sousa.

They also performed several pieces, which were played by Civil War bands as well as two compositions by Henry Morschheimer, a 19th-century Arkansas composer. These Morschheimer works were uncovered by Parker in the Library of Congress, and were probably receiving their first performances in over a century.
