Ross Allen is one of seven students in Kansas named a 2013 Newman Civic Fellow

Submitted by Josh Mosier

Campus Compact, a national coalition of almost 1,200 college and university presidents that promotes public and community service and develops students’ citizenship skills, has named 181 student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country as 2013 Newman Civic Fellows.

Ross Allen, a sophomore from Holton, is one of seven students in Kansas in this year’s class of Newman Civic Fellows. Allen has explored how community and student organizations viewed service work, reviewed reflections and evaluations of service participants, and how service and learning could be integrated into co-curricular service work. Allen's student leadership continues to be an asset for the university as it begins to expand its engagement experiences for undergraduates that recognize the importance of being socially responsible civic leaders.

As a 2013 Newman Civic Fellow, Allen represents a group of students who are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves, the root causes of social issues, and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change.

Newman Civic Fellow Awards are made in memory of Frank Newman, a founder of Campus Compact, who dedicated his life to creating systemic change through education reform.

The Newman Civic Fellows Awards are made possible through the generous support of the KPMG Foundation.
