Alternative Service Committee sets up group discussions for classified employees to participate in regarding university support staff

Submitted by Alternative Service Committee

The Alternative Service Committee comprised of 15 voting classified members and five non-voting university community members, is currently working on the development of a plan for a new system of administration for employment, known as university support staff under the provision of statute 76-715a, at Kansas State University.

A plan, known as white papers, is being drafted in collaboration with K-State for the employment provisions allowable by law to be changed. The plan will give classified employees a choice concerning their employment; whether to stay with the state civil service system or leave the state civil service system and become university support staff.

In April and May, the committee will be holding multiple group discussions for classified employees to attend and have the opportunity to provide valuable feedback and input to the committee about the drafted white papers. Registration for the group discussion will be available through your HRIS self-service portal beginning March 1. It is important you register due to room capacity limits. You may register in one of two ways:

1)  Through HRIS Self Enrollment, or

2)  Email to training@k-state.edu. Please include your name, employee ID if known and group discussion date.

When you register, the location of the discussion group will be indicated in HRIS based on expected attendance size. If you have questions, please contact training@k-state.edu or 785-532-6277.

Please contact alternativeservice@k-state.edu with regard to the details of using this service. Throughout the month of March, various communications will be sent to classified employees as a reminder to register for the discussion groups.

The feedback and input obtained from the discussion groups will assist the committee in making any final recommendations to the white papers, before they are presented at numerous town hall meetings prior to an election in late fall 2013.

Communications and progress of the plan can be found on the committee’s website.
