University comments on funding announcement in governor's proposed state budget

Submitted by Communications and Marketing

On Jan. 16, Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback announced a two-year proposed state budget that includes new funding for Kansas State University's College of Architecture, Planning and Design. Included in the governor’s proposal is a flat budget with no base decrease for higher education, including no general increases for the university and therefore no salary increases for faculty and staff.

The recommendations for Fiscal Years 2014 and 2015 include $35 million each year for rehabilitation and repair projects on campuses statewide. For a second year, $5 million was included for the College of Veterinary Medicine. The College of Engineering is slated for $3.5 million to continue a 10-year engineering expansion program. Proposed allocations also include $5 million for animal health research to support Gov. Brownback’s goal of growing the animal health industry.

"We appreciate Gov. Brownback's continued support of higher education and recognition of the need to invest in our exemplary programs," said Kirk Schulz, university president. "As we strive to increase the university’s rankings across the board, it is imperative to maintain and improve the high rankings we have already earned. We are pleased to see increased support in those areas identified by the governor as priorities for the state.”

Moreover, the proposed budget recommends $2.5 million over two years to begin a four-phase process of remodeling and rebuilding facilities for the nationally ranked College of Architecture, Planning and Design.

“The College of Architecture, Planning and Design has built a strong national and international reputation and is poised to rise to the next level,” said Tim de Noble, dean of the college. “The funds provided in this budget serve as a catalyst for our programs, our faculty and students.”

Please note the budget process is just beginning and there will be many suggested changes and recommendations during the legislative session. Those with questions are encouraged to contact Sue Peterson, K-State director of governmental affairs, at skp@k-state.edu.
