Highlights from Jan. 9 Classified Senate meeting

Here are the highlights from the Jan. 9 Classified Senate meeting. A draft of the meeting minutes is available on the Classified Senate website.

Jennifer Gehrt, attending for Gary Leitnaker, reported that Char Shropshire has been working on campus guidelines for the Employee Suggestion Program, and hopes to have them completed by Feb. 1.

Dale Billam, Classified Senate President, reported that a new email system could be installed as early as this summer. More online instruction courses will be offered and their numbers will continue to increase. The Kansas Legislature convenes Jan. 14 and the current information is that K-12 and higher education funding won't be reduced.

Legislative Affairs Committee co-chair Lesa Reves reported that work has begun on the Classified Senate elections to be in March. Nominations will be accepted Feb. 1-20, and the elections will be March 1-15. Preparations continue for Day on the Hill, set for Jan. 30.

Annette Hernandez reported that a new banner will be ordered for the Recognition Ceremony in April.

Public Relations Committee co-chair Lindsay Thompson reported that the next issue of the ROAR will be distributed at the end of February. The committee will distribute a flyer to advertise the Classified Senate Open House to be at the February meeting.

Alternative Service Committee chair Carol Marden reported that the committee met with personnel at KU. Summaries of the committee's work will appear in K-State Today in two parts. They hope to present a plan in the fall, with a vote being taken 90 days later after informational meetings have been held.

Pam Warren, Classified Senate representative on the Faculty Senate Fringe Benefits Committee, provided a copy of the proposal that was submitted to the Faculty Senate committee regarding tuition assistance.

Becki Bohnenblust reported on the upcoming events the K-State Sesquicentennial Committee has planned for the celebration. Events will begin Thursday, Feb. 14, with an open house in Ahearn from 1-7 p.m.

Suggestions that were submitted to Classified Senate for ways to improve working conditions and morale will all be given to President Schulz for his consideration.
