News from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, or CPSC.  Recalls from the weeks ending Dec. 31, 2012.

Five infant deaths prompt the CPSC to sue manufacturer of Nap Nanny and Chill Infant Recliners. The complaint alleges that the Nap Nanny Generation One and Two, and Chill model infant recliners contain defects in the design, warnings and instructions, which pose a substantial risk of injury and death to infants. The commission voted 3-0 to approve the filing of the complaint, which seeks an order requiring that the firm notify the public of the defect and offer consumers a full refund. RIDGID Coil Roofing Nailer and RIDGID Clipped Head Framing Nailer recalled by One World Technologies Due to laceration or injury hazard. Sold exclusively at Home Depot. The trigger assembly on the nailers can malfunction and involuntarily discharge a fastener, posing a laceration or injury hazard to consumers. Dream On Me recalls children's bed rails due to suffocation and strangulation hazards. The bed rail can separate from the mattress allowing a child's body to become entrapped if it slips between the rail and the mattress. This poses suffocation and strangulation hazards to children. Dream On Me recalls bath seats due to drowning hazard. The bath seats fail to meet federal safety standards, including the requirements for stability. Trampolines recalled by Sportspower due to injury hazard. Sold exclusively at Sports Authority. The trampoline's metal legs can move out of position and puncture the jumping area, posing a risk of injury, including deep, penetrating puncture wounds, cuts and bruises to children and adults on the trampoline. Sportspower recalls children's liquid motion waterslides due to injury hazard. Sold exclusively at Menards. The warning labels on the children's waterslide are inadequate for weight limit and fail to tell consumers never to slide head first. Jotul and Scan Gas fireplace inserts recalled by Jotul North America due to electrical shock and burn hazards. The fireplace insert's electrical wiring can come into contact with the metal rating plate on the insert, posing electrical shock and burn hazards to consumers. High Powered Magnet Desk sets recalled by Reiss Innovations due to ingestion hazard. Sold exclusively on Amazon.com. When two or more magnets are swallowed, they can link together inside a child's intestines and clamp onto body tissues, causing intestinal obstructions, perforations, sepsis and death. American Mattress Manufacturing recalls Renovated Mattresses with Foundations due to violation of federal flammability standard. Bon-Ton agrees to pay $450,000 civil penalty for failing to report drawstrings on children's jackets and sweatshirts. The settlement resolves CPSC staff allegations that the firm knowingly failed to report to CPSC immediately, as required by federal law, that its children's hooded jackets and sweatshirts were sold with drawstrings through the hood. LG recalls Top-Loading Washing Machines due to risk of injury. Norco recalls 2011 Havoc bicycles due to risk of injury. The bicycle frame can crack at the joint where the top tube meets the down tube. Canon recalls for repair WFT-E7A Wireless file transmitter due to risk of allergic reaction. A chemical used in the rubber part on the top cover of the product can result in a reaction that changes the rubber from black to white and poses a risk of skin irritation to the consumer. CPSC sues Star Networks USA over hazardous, High-Powered Magnetic Balls and Cubes. In an effort to prevent children from suffering further harm, CPSC staff filed an administrative complaint on against Star Networks USA, LLC, of Fairfield, N.J., alleging that their Magnicube Magnet Balls and Magnet Cubes contain defects in their design, packaging, warnings and instructions, which pose a substantial risk of injury to the public. The commission voted 2-1 to approve the filing of the complaint, which seeks, among other things, an order that the firm stop selling Star Networks Magnicube Magnet Balls and Magnet Cubes, notify the public of the defect, and offer consumers a full refund. Four Retailers agree to stop sale and voluntarily recall Nap Nanny Recliners due to five infant deaths. A voluntary recall to consumers who own Nap Nanny(r) recliners made by Baby Matters, LLC of Berwyn, Pa. Retailers currently participating include Amazon.com, Buy Buy Baby, Diapers.com and Toys R Us/Babies R Us. At the request of the CPSC, these retailers have agreed to voluntarily participate because the manufacturer is unable or unwilling to participate in the recall. Meijer recalls Falls Creek Kids Infant and Toddler denim jeans due to choking hazard.
