Presentations at the National Association of Foreign Student Advisers Association of International Educators regional conference
Over 200 academic educators met at the NAFSA: Association of International Educators regional conference Oct. 22-26, in Wichita. The 11 NAFSA regions hold their conferences each year in late October and early November to provide opportunities for international educators to exchange ideas, present best practices, network with accomplished colleagues and stay current with the latest trends. Our NAFSA region includes the states of Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
NAFSA was founded in 1948 as the National Association of Foreign Student Advisers to promote the professional development of American college and university officials responsible for assisting and advising foreign students who had come to study in the United States after World War II. The academic institutions, government agencies and private organizations that combined to form NAFSA knew that meeting the needs of students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds required special knowledge and competencies. With nearly 10,000 members today, NAFSA is the world's largest nonprofit professional association dedicated to international education.
Kansas State University staff presenting at the regional conference included:
Stacey Bailey, international student and scholar services, and Mary Ellen Barkley, career and employment services, presented "Collaborations between Career Services and International Student Services"
Bailey and Caitlin Kelley, international admission and recruiting, presented "Every Man a Wildcat?: Engaging Internationals through Sport and Traditions."
Bailey also presented "A Road Map to Understanding and Implementing Insurance for International Students," "Different Perspectives and Interpretation: Open Discussion," and F-1 Advising: Intermediate.
Maria Beebe, international student and scholar services, presented "J-1 Advising for Beginners."
Beebe, Kelley, Sara Thurston-González, international student and scholar services, and Alum Danvas Mabeya, presented "Book Discussion: 'What is the What.'
Joe Milostan, study abroad office, and Barkley presented "Study Abroad Re-entry Programs: Exploring Reflection and Professional Development."
Additionally, Bailey has been appointed to the international student advising core education program team for NAFSA. In this role she will work with a team of national experts on international student advising to develop the curriculum for the training program for new advisors in the field. She has also been elected as the Kansas international educators chairperson and NAFSA Region II state representative for Kansas, a two-year term effective January 2013.
Beebe is currently serving on the NAFSA Regulatory Practice International Scholar Subcommittee and has recently been appointed to a task force looking at the 24-month bar for J-1 scholars.
Kansas State University will send staff to NAFSA's Annual International Conference in St. Louis May 26-31 in St. Louis, MO.
