Native American Heritage Day Nov. 12

Submitted by Georgia Perez

The Native American Student Association is sponsoring a Native American Heritage Day from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 12 in the the K-State Student Union Courtyard. Stop by and talk to local natives about their cultural displays, hear the Native American Flutes and see artifacts.

Local natives that will be present are:

  • Sister Virginia Pearl, Citizen Potawatomi Nation, is our honored elder. Her grandmother was on the Potawatomi Trail of Death traveling to Kansas in 1837.
  • Jon Boursaw, retired lieutenant colonel of the U.S. Air Force, Citizen Potawatomi Nation, is our honored veteran.
  • Steve Schiltz will be sharing his art of making Chinook and Native Kansas cedar flutes. He will share his music with us.
  • Mike Perez, Mexican-American, will be displaying his stone knives, leather and beaded items as was exhibited last April in Kemper Art Gallery along with Native American items from various tribes.
  • Terra Coons will be weaving Cherokee baskets and free to answer questions on basketry.

Come see our culture and talk to our honored guests one on one as you pass through the Union. Hear, see and feel our heritage. Native American Student Association table display will be "go green — recycle — make paperbeads." Instruction sheets are free to K-State students along with bookmarks of Wilma Mankiler, Cherokee Nation. Questions can be routed to Brandy Tholstrup, Native American Student Association president
