Faculty in communication sciences and disorders present at state conference

Submitted by Debra Burnett

Debra Burnett, assistant professor; Susan Meier, clinical instructor; and Melanie Hilgers, clinic director, all of the College of Human Ecology's communication sciences and disorders program in the School of Family Studies and Human Services, presented at the Kansas State Speech-Language-Hearing Association's annual conference on Sept. 27-29 in Wichita.

Burnett and Meier presented research findings from a recent study exploring social groups for children with autism as well as information about therapy strategies used in a summer camp setting in the presentation "Social groups for children with ASD: Two delivery models."  In addition, Burnett had the poster presentation "Vocal prosody used to signal sarcasm during book reading" to present findings from a research project.

Hilgers, along with clinic directors from three additional university programs in Kansas, presented information related to clinical supervision, "Clinical education: Competencies and conversations."

The conference, themed "Imagine the Possibilities," partnered with the Assistive Technology for Kansans program to provide informational sessions in the areas of speech-language pathology, audiology and assistive technology.
