First-generation Student Lounge open house and tutor scholarship dedication

Submitted by Academic Achievement Center

Join the Academic Achievement Center for the First-generation Student Lounge open house and dedication of the Kimberly Dierks Scholarship for Tutors of Distinction from 1:30-5 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, in 101 Holtz Hall. Refreshments will be served.

Events include:

• 1:30-2:30 p.m. — plaque unveiling and scholarship announcement.
• Remarks at 2 p.m.
• 2:30-5 p.m. — First-generation Student Lounge open house.

Thanks to the generosity of Phillips 66, first-generation students at K-State now have a space to gather and build community. Located in the Holtz Hall Tutoring Center at the heart of the Student Success Corridor, the lounge is an inviting space elegantly furnished that includes a large screen TV equipped with multimedia technology, which will display important information regarding programs and services specifically for first-generation students. Students will be able to use this space not only to study and take breaks from classes, but also to meet other first-generation students.

In summer 2018, Kimberly Dierks retired from Kansas State University and her role as tutoring coordinator in the Academic Achievement Center after 14 years of dedicated service. Thanks to her commitment to student success, understanding of the impact of peer tutors, and generosity, the Kimberly Dierks Scholarship for Tutors of Distinction will be announced this semester. This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded each spring semester to one outstanding tutor who goes above and beyond to support student success. The Academic Achievement Center will be celebrating her service by installing a commemorative plaque recognizing the creation of a student space within the Holtz Hall lobby in her name.
