K-State family remembers sociology instructor Roy Barnett

Submitted by Communications and Marketing

Roy Lewis Barnett, instructor of sociology, died Sept. 28.

He was born April 5, 1972, and attended Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, Okla., graduating in 1990. He attended the University of Oklahoma, earning a bachelor's degree in 1994, a master's degree in 1997 and a doctorate in 2001 in sociology with a specialty in criminology. Barnett was the first member of his family to earn a Ph.D.

His mother and three siblings live in Oklahoma.

Barnett joined the Kansas State University department of sociology, anthropology and social work in 2001 as a temporary instructor. He taught sociology and criminology courses and was the faculty adviser for the Criminology Club. Among the many students he taught during his 12 years at K-State, it is believed that he taught every sociology major since 2001.

Betsy Cauble, head of the department, said Barnett was a humble, kind man who very much appreciated the students and enjoyed teaching, as well as being an enthusiastic fan of both Oklahoma and Kansas State.

Funeral services will be in Oklahoma, while a memorial service is planned here.
