Education specialist Clark Hoelscher to give two workshops on biology and education at K-State on March 29

Submitted by Nicholas Gallivan

Clark M. Hoelscher is the head of the "Out for Equity" Program in the public schools in St. Paul, Minnesota. The program works to improve outcomes for LGBTQ+ students of color. They have a background as a science and physics teacher, and they earned a doctorate in curriculum and instruction with a minor in educational psychology from the University of Minnesota.

Sponsored by the K-State Division of Biology, College of Education, and LGBT Resource Center, Hoelscher will visit campus on Friday, March 29, to facilitate two workshops.

Their first workshop, titled "Engaging Endless Forms Most Beautiful: Exploring a Queer Praxis of Teaching in the Life Science," will be from 8-11 a.m. in 232 Ackert Hall. Hoelscher and members of the Biology Graduate Student Association will cover topics regarding heteronormative framing of our understanding of the natural world, opportunities within a queer praxis of life science instruction, and other related themes.

Their second workshop, titled "Beyond the Rainbow: Gender and Sexual Diversity in K-12 Education," will take place from 1-3 p.m. in 21 Bluemont Hall. Hoelscher and College of Education students will cover topics regarding approaches and practices linked to higher outcomes for LGBTQ+ students, the role of teachers in improving these students' lives, and other related topics. Small-group discussions and activities will be used, as well as numerous resources will be shared.

If you are interested in attending or have any questions about either of these events, please contact Sam Sharpe, Division of Biology, at sharpes@k-state.edu, or Nick Gallivan, College of Education, at ngallivan@k-state.edu
