Highlights from the Feb. 12 Faculty Senate meeting

Guest: Vice President for Research Peter Dorhout discussed and answered questions related to the budget, specifically related to research monies in the future.

Standing committee and Student Senate reports:

  • Academic Affairs: A new degree program in engineering was approved. The Academic Fresh Start and Forgiveness policies were approved to be added to the University Handbook, Section 104. These policies were approved in the past; however, were not included in the Handbook at that time. The committee is reviewing K-State 8 policies as well as the approval, routing and notification procedures for course and curriculum approval.
  • Faculty Affairs: The committee will bring overall revisions to Section K forward next month. They will have a joint meeting with Professional Staff Affairs later this month.
  • Professional Staff Affairs: They will meet jointly with Faculty Affairs later this month to discuss representation for term unclassified professional employees.
  • Student Senate: Student Senators were in Topeka attending State Higher Ed day.
  • Technology, FSCOT: Major reorganization within IT is ongoing. Duo two-factor authentication is being rolled out in phases.
  • University Planning, FSCOUP: They did not meet in February, but will continue to work with ongoing initiatives this spring.

Announcements

  • The monthly KBOR meeting report was provided by President Wood.
  • Spring open fora with President Myers have been scheduled:
    • Polytechnic — 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, College Center Conference Room. 
    • Olathe — 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, Forum Hall, Room 110. 
    • Manhattan — 9 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, K-State Alumni Center, main floor.
    • Faculty Senate elections process begins on Feb. 20.

Open discussion period

  • Library subscriptions: With the increase in subscription cost and decrease in funding, the library is having to make choices regarding which subscriptions to cut. Open forums are being held and the next one will be on March 19.
