NACADA Webinar Series to begin Feb. 6

Submitted by Brad Cunningham

The Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies will host the first NACADA webinar of the spring 2019 series, "Incorporating Coaching Conversations into Academic Advising" at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, in 205 K-State Student Union. The webinar is free to attend.

The webinar will be presented by a team of advisors from Indiana University, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, University of Oklahoma, and the Indiana University School of Medicine-West Lafayette.

Academic coaching is an advising approach that can empower a student to reflect and act upon the range of goals, interests and passions available in higher education. Through coaching, students can learn to think critically, solve problems, overcome personal obstacles, discover strengths, and generally make the most of the college experience. Early research on coaching suggests that it can support student engagement that leads to retention and completion — move students from just surviving to actually thriving in school.

In this webinar, participants will learn about the basic premises of coaching, see a short coaching demonstration video, and encounter several models for implementing coaching in a higher education setting. Presenters will share key coaching concepts and stories of educators who have successfully implemented coaching in unique ways. Attendees will discover the value of utilizing coaching with students, hear about one model for coaching conversations, and have an opportunity to explore ways to implement coaching on their campuses.
