All in the family: University's 84th annual Family Day offers something for everybody

Show and tell isn't just limited to grade school classrooms. Kansas State University students also have the chance to introduce their family members to a few of their favorite campus places and experiences at the university's 84th annual Family Day.

This year's Family Day is Saturday, Sept. 15. The day boasts many fun and diverse activities at the university, including a Harry Potter room adventure in Hale Library, creating wearable artwork and visiting the Insect Zoo.

"Family Day is always a great time for families of all ages and even the Manhattan community to explore campus and get a taste of the K-State experience," said Danielle Young, assistant coordinator for campus visits at new student services.

The legacy pinning ceremony and Family Time in Cat Town, two longstanding traditions on Family Day, are two great ways to celebrate being a K-Stater, Young said.

The legacy pinning ceremony recognizes the commitment of K-State families and friends across generations. Family members who are not K-State alumni will be honored with the K-Stater by Choice recognition for their support of the university. Brunch will be served before the ceremony. The ceremony and brunch are from 10-11:30 a.m. in the ballroom of the K-State Alumni Center. The cost is $15 per person and registrations are due by noon Sept. 12. Reservations can be made and questions can be answered by calling 785-532-2222 or visiting http://www.k-state.edu/familyday/.

Family Time in Cat Town is the annual pre-game event on the southwest side of Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The casual event begins at 4 p.m. — two hours prior to kickoff of the K-State vs. North Texas football game. K-Staters and their families will be able to meet and interact with other families and K-State administrators, as well as enjoy great food and have the chance to win $2,000 toward tuition.

Cat Town costs $10 per person, with registration required by Sept. 7. Tickets for the tuition drawing may be purchased at the event by visiting http://www.k-state.edu/familyday/events.html, or by calling 785-532-7584.

New this year is the C. Clyde Run/Fun Run/Walk for Charity. The charity run is in honor of the C. Clyde Jones, the College of Business Administration's first dean. All proceeds from the event go to benefit Shepherd's Crossing, a local ecumenical ministry that offers budget counseling, referrals and financial support to residents in Riley County and St. George.

"It's a fun opportunity for families and friends to come together and support a really good cause," Young said.

Registration for the fun run/walk is $10 for children under 16 years old; $20 for students 16 and up; and $25 for all other adults. Registration may be made online at http://www.cba.ksu.edu/index.aspx?NID=1270.

Several activities will be offered on Friday, Sept. 14, including an art sale, classic car show, a screening of the Disney and Pixar film "Brave" and a battle of the bands.
