Training available during Nov. 1 Safety Fair and Supplier Showcase

Submitted by Human Capital Services - Learning and Development

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety will provide a variety of trainings for all K-State employees during the Safety Fair and Supplier Showcase on Thursday, Nov. 1.

  • Standard First Aid, WF0001, 8:30-10:30 a.m., Cottonwood Room in the K-State Student Union. An American Heart Association-trained Cintas representative will teach rescuers to effectively recognize and treat adult emergencies in the critical first minutes until EMS personnel arrive.
  • ALiCE, WF0476, 10 a.m. to noon, Flint Hills Room in the K-State Student Union. The K-State Police Department offers training for citizen response to active shooter and critical incidents called ALiCE — Alert, Lockdown, inform, Counter and Evacuate. The ALiCE training program explores statistical data and provides suggested available victim responses to individuals who may find themselves in any critical incident, including an active shooter situation. The training is scenario-based and does not require any physical activity by participants.
  • Hazardous Waste Awareness, WTD080, 11 a.m. to noon, Cottonwood Room in the K-State Student Union. Learn about proper chemical disposal at K-State. This is required training for all employees who generate or have responsibility for hazardous waste.
  • Fire Extinguisher Training, WTD159, noon to 1 p.m. and 3:30-4:30 p.m., Cottonwood Room in the K-State Student Union. The Department of Environmental Health and Safety will teach how to use a fire extinguisher. This session fulfills the annual requirement. Before attending this training session, you must complete a fire extinguisher online training course. Upon completion of the online course, you will receive a certificate. Please sign and date the printed certificate and bring it with you to the classroom training session.
  • Stop the Bleed, EHS101, noon to 2 p.m., Flint Hills Room in the K-State Student Union. The K-State Police Department will teach students, faculty and staff specific lifesaving bleeding control skills. No matter how rapid the arrival of professional emergency responders, bystanders will always be first on the scene. A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes and it is important to quickly stop the blood loss. Those nearest to someone with life-threatening injuries are best positioned to provide first care. According to a recent National Academies of Science study, trauma is the leading cause of death for Americans under age 46. Stop the Bleed training teaches proper bleeding control techniques, including how to use your hands, dressings and tourniquets to save someone's life or your own.
  • Asbestos Awareness for Building Occupants, WTD166, 2-3 p.m., Cottonwood Room in the K-State Student Union. The Department of Environmental Health and Safety will offer asbestos awareness for building occupants training to anyone interested in learning more about what asbestos is, health concerns associated with it, and where it can be found on campus.

To register for one of these opportunities, you can either sign up through HRIS Self-Service or send an email to Megan Hoelting at learning-develop-hr@k-state.edu. When sending an email, please include your name, department, employee ID number, course title and the course number.
