Starkey graduates from Higher Education Resource Services Institute
Alysia Starkey, assistant dean of academics and director of libraries at Kansas State University Salina, recently graduated from the Higher Education Resource Services, or HERS, Denver Summer Institute, July 22 through Aug. 5 at the University of Denver.
“Developing the potential of future academic leaders is critical if we are to meet the increased demands of change, accountability and effectiveness within higher education," said Dennis Kuhlman, retired CEO and dean emeritus and Starkey’s program sponsor. "The HERS program provides the opportunity for immersion in relevant topics that develop that leadership.”
While Starkey is the first woman administrator from K-State Salina to have been sponsored to participate, Kansas State University currently employs 12 alumnae of the Higher Education Resource Services Institute for Women in Higher Education.
Starkey has been at K-State Salina since June 2002, serving as assistant dean of academics since July 2010. She began her career as the technical services/automatic coordinator for the K-State Salina Library before advancing to her current position.
Since 1978, the Higher Education Resource Services Institute for Women in Higher Education at the University of Denver has annually offered women faculty and administrators the opportunity to participate in an intensive program that prepares them to be leaders in higher education.
The 66 participants selected for this year’s institute represented 57 institutions across the United States. Responding to the current environment for higher education globally, the 2012 institute's focus was "Women Leaders: Facing the Challenges as We Re-Invent Higher Education.” Topics included understanding the environment for higher education; planning and leading change in the academy; managing and investing strategic resources; engaging individual and institutional diversity; and mapping your leadership development.
