Claire Panosian Dunavan to present BRI Research Fellows Lecture/Diagnostic Medicine and Pathobiology Seminar Sept. 27

Claire Panosian Dunavan, professor emeritus/recalled, Division of Infectious Diseases at the David Geffen School of Medicine in UCLA, will present "L.A. Tropical Casebook — Exotic Blights in My Own Backyard" at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in the Lecture Hall of the Biosecurity Research Institute, Pat Roberts Hall. Refreshments will be served at 3 p.m.

The seminar is co-sponsored by the Marty Vanier and Bob Krause Biosecurity Research Institute Research Fellows Program and the diagnostic medicine and pathobiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine. 

Presentation abstract: In this talk, Panosian, a tropical medicine specialist, medical journalist, and past president of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, will share stories, insights and updates on Chagas disease, leishmaniasis, leprosy, cysticercosis, and echinococcosis, five "exotic blights" which she and her colleagues often encounter in Los Angeles. She also will describe her journey to her dual career in tropical medicine and medical journalism and read excerpts from selected popular articles about imported tropical diseases which she has published in Discover magazine, Scientific American, and other magazines and newspapers over the last 20 years.
