Furniture Amnesty Day on July 27

Submitted by Lacy Pitts

The 10th annual Furniture Amnesty Day will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, July 27, at City Park in Manhattan. This event provides a chance for Manhattan residents to donate their used furniture to people who can make good use of it.

"We encourage people to use this program to dispose of unwanted furniture," said Brad Claussen, assistant chief with the Manhattan Fire Department. "If you leave it on the curb, your trash company may not pick it up, and it can become a nuisance. By donating, you're helping keep the city clean, promoting sustainability, and helping your neighbors."

Furniture donations can be made in one of two ways. Items may be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Baker Field parking lot in City Park on the day of the event, July 27. Residents living in Manhattan city limits also can request pick up of their donations. Fill out the online request form, or residents can call the city manager's office at 785-587-2404 to request pick up. The deadline to sign up for donation pick up is 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 25.

Acceptable donations include sofas, couches, desks, recliners, lamps, end tables, dressers, headboards, chairs and kitchen tables.

Donations that will not be accepted include dishwashers, pianos, grills, refrigerators, televisions, computers and other electronics.

To select furniture items, residents may sign up beginning at 8 a.m. on July 27 at City Park. No additional paperwork is necessary. Furniture selection will begin at 11 a.m. and last until 4 p.m. Furniture pick up will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. If furniture remains after 4 p.m., it will be open to the general public for one hour, then disposed of after 5 p.m. All participants are responsible for taking their items home. If donated furniture selected by participants is left on the premises after 4 p.m., it will be disposed of.

The city of Manhattan, Staley School of Leadership Studies, HandsOn K-State and Konza United Way sponsor this annual event. For more information, visit cityofmhk.com/furniture or call 785-587-2404.
