SUMaR 2018 Closing Conference

Submitted by Math department

The SUMaR 2018 Closing Conference, a culmination of the Summer Undergraduate Mathematics Research Experience for Undergraduates program in the mathematics department, will be on July 24 in 13 Leasure Hall.

This research experience is for students preparing for graduate studies in mathematics and those from community colleges who might otherwise not have an opportunity to experience mathematics work and consider graduate studies. During eight weeks in the summer, 10-12 undergraduate students visit K-State and carry out research projects under the mentorship of the mathematics department's faculty.

Program participants Megan Kaiser and Jill Vesta are the conference coordinators and Tim Leafblad is the conference moderator.

The conference presentation schedule:

  • Gillian Baker and Angel Carrillo will present "Modeling the E ects of Nanoparticles on Cell Behavior" at 10 a.m. They are mentored by Zhenzhen Shi, Majid Jaberi-Douraki and Heman Shakeri.

  • Jack Luong, Ryan McConnell and Jill Vesta will present "Characterization of Extinction Time and Approximation by Explicit Solutions for Total Variation Flow" at 10:30 a.m. They are mentored by Marianne Korten.

  • Nick Backes, Megan Kaiser, Tim Leafblad and Emma Peterson will present "Muti-Skein Invariants for Welded and Extended Welded Knots and Links" at 11 a.m. They are mentored by David Yetter.
