Summer Choral Institute to perform in Topeka, Kansas City

Submitted by Madison Deal

The Kansas State University Summer Choral Institute, now in its 40th year, will have four free public performances featuring music on social justice themes.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 7, at All Faiths Chapel on K-State's Manhattan campus; 1 p.m. Friday, June 8, at the Brown vs. Board of Education Museum in Topeka; 10 a.m. Saturday, June 9, at the Nelson-Atkins Museum as a part of the Juneteenth Celebration in Kansas City; and 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at Unity Temple on the Plaza.

All concerts will be conducted by Julie Yu-Oppenheim, co-director of choral studies at Kansas State University.

The Summer Choral Institute is one of the nation's most unique summer programs for high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors. Students participate in an intensive week of rehearsals, master classes, private coachings, musical performances, lectures, piano classes, as well as team-building and character building exercises.

The institute is sponsored by the Master Teacher Institute for the Arts and directed by Yu-Oppenheim, Joshua Oppenheim and Bryan Pinkall along with a team of K-State music education students and alumni.

Students accepted to the institute receive a full scholarship covering all expenses — tuition, room, board, admissions, etc. — for the duration of the institute. This year, 40 students from 13 states were selected to attend.
