Sociologists honor students at annual signature event

Submitted by Nadia Shapkina

K-State's sociology program celebrated undergraduate and graduate students' achievements at an annual signature event on April 13. All students receiving scholarships were selected by faculty, based on academic excellence and a promising career in sociology or criminology.

Skyler Stern, junior, was awarded the Mildred and Robert Hininger Scholarship, and Keiteyana Parks, senior, received the Damon and Carrie Hininger Scholarship. Both scholarships were established by Damon and Carrie Hininger and are awarded to outstanding undergraduate students majoring in sociology. The Mildred and Robert Hininger scholarship is given specifically to a student specializing in criminology.

Lati Horton, junior, was awarded the Ann McKee Regnier scholarship. The Regnier scholarship is awarded to a promising sociology major, with preference given to historically underrepresented students.

Margaret Szmed, senior, received the Grace and Glenn W. Long Memorial Scholarship for undergraduate students majoring in sociology and social work.

Nicholas Ost was awarded the John Thurow Hill Memorial Award that recognizes outstanding students majoring in sociology.

Alayna Colburn was awarded the Sociology Graduate Student Teaching Award for her exceptional instructional performance.

Alexandra Pimentel, graduate student, received the Sociology Graduate Research Award for her excellence in publishing peer review articles and book chapters and presenting scholarly work at conferences.
