Activate Summit: Leadership in a Time of Resistance

Submitted by Emily Polston

The Staley School of Leadership Studies Ambassadors will host a leadership summit from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Sunday, April 22, in Town Hall in the Leadership Studies Building. This summit will help students learn to engage in organizing and developing specific community connections. Activate will include two workshops, a networking lunch and a keynote speaker.

The first workshop will be on implicit bias training to allow participants to interrogate privilege specifically as it pertains to race. The workshop will help participants establish a firm ally identity that considers how individuals perpetuate or intervene in systemic racism.

The second workshop will address ethics and resistance. Participants will consider ethical temptations, dilemmas and paradigms in regards to leveraging this knowledge when interacting with change organizations. Between these workshops, a networking lunch will provide attendees an opportunity to speak with a variety of organizations in the Manhattan community and on the Manhattan campus that work to create positive social change.

Activate will conclude with Rachel Levitt, instructor from the gender, women and sexuality studies department, who will give a keynote address "Working for Change Where We Are." She will share personal experiences with social justice and activism within the community.

This event is open to anyone interested in community organizing. Lunch will be provided for participants and everyone is encouraged to register
