Engineering Extension to host 2018 KidWind Challenge at K-State
Engineering Extension will host the 2018 KidWind Challenge Competition from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, April 6, at 2323 Anderson Ave., Suite 300, in Manhattan. Registration will take place from 8-9 a.m.
Eighteen teams from eight Kansas schools will compete in the ultimate wind energy learning experience. They have done their homework when it comes to wind power and used that knowledge to build, test and fine-tune their turbines. Now it is time to see how they stack up against the competition. Each team's turbine will be put to the test in a 48-inch by 48-inch wind tunnel at a wind speed of approximately 3.5-5 meters per second. The winning team will be invited to attend the national KidWind Challenge at the American Wind Energy Association WINDPOWER 2018 conference May 8-10 in Chicago, Illinois.
Participating schools include Buhler High School; Sterling High School; USD 358 Middle School, Oxford; Paola Middle School; Chase County USD 284 Middle School, Cottonwood Falls; USD 393 Solomon Middle School; Hope Street Charter Academy, Topeka; and Riverbend International School, Atchison.
The KidWind Challenge is sponsored by the Kansas Corporation Commission, Kansas State University, U.S. Department of Energy, National Renewable Laboratory, EDF Renewable Energy and NextEra Energy Resources. Members of the K-State Wildcat Wind Power team also are assisting with the event.
