K-State Parks for the People team to present work Saturday

Submitted by Emily Vietti

On Saturday, at 1 p.m., a Kansas State University team will present its final project work for the Parks for the People competition in Nicodemus. The presentation, which will take place at the Nicodemus Township Hall, is open to the public.

A team led by La Barbara Wigfall, associate professor of landscape architecture, and Josh Cheek, instructor of landscape architecture, was selected as a stage 1 winner in Parks for the People: A Student Competition to Reimagine America's National Parks, sponsored by the Van Alen Institute and the U.S. National Park Service.

Forty-one interdisciplinary teams entered the competition in the fall, and nine groups were selected to continue on from what the Van Alen Institute called an "extraordinary field of submissions from schools across the United States."

In January, the winning K-State group started its collaboration with the Nicodemus National Historic Site in Nicodemus to "creatively rethink the national park experience." Over the course of the spring 2012 semester, each studio explored design solutions that broadly address the challenges facing the national park system today.

The K-State students involved with the project come from several areas of study, including landscape architecture, regional and community planning, interior architecture and product design, architecture, and interior design.
