Graduate Student Council announces Professional Development Fall Workshop Series

Submitted by Kelsey Peterson

Graduate students have the opportunity to enrich their education beyond their own disciplines by participating in the Graduate Student Council fall 2017 Professional Development Workshop Series. The Graduate Student Council strives to provide informational meetings, workshops and forums that enhance the professional development of graduate students.

K-State graduate students and postdocs who attend at least five professional development events hosted by the Graduate Student Council during the 2017-2018 academic year will be recognized with a professional development certificate.

Fall 2017 workshops include:

  • CV Building and Career Planning, 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, in the Berney Family Welcome Center Theater. Andrew Kohls, assistant director of the Career Center, will talk about services and resources provided by the Career Center — i.e., one-on-one meetings with Career Center advisors, mock interviews, space for students to use for in-person and video interviews, career closet and photo Fridays.
  • Writing a Teaching, Research, and Diversity Statement, 3-5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, in K-State Student Union's Wildcat Chamber. As part of National Postdoc Appreciation Week, the Graduate Student Council and K-State Post Doctoral Association are partnering for both graduate students and postsdocs who are interested in learning how to write a teaching philosophy, research statement and diversity statement.
  • Network and Etiquette Dinner, 4:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, in the K-State Student Union Bluemont Room. The third annual Networking and Etiquette Dinner will feature guest speaker Keira Mann, K-State alumna and national etiquette certified professional. Mann will present an interactive session about fine-dining etiquette, networking at conferences, conducting business at meetings, and handling meals on a job interview. This event will include a networking session, three-course meal, and an opportunity to practice proper dining etiquette. The cost of the etiquette dinner is $20 for students and includes a three-course meal and refreshments before the dinner. Registration closes Wednesday, Sept. 13. Register online.
  • Poster Presentations 101, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, in the Big 12 Room of the K-State Student Union. In this session, attendees will learn how to present written, graphic, and oral content that can be easily understood and has an influence on diverse audiences. This session may be especially useful for graduate students who plan to give their first poster presentation this semester, but more experienced graduate students also may learn new strategies for improving their presentation skills.
  • Communicating Science and Scholarship to General Audiences, 3-5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, in the K-State Student Union's Wildcat Chamber. Sarah Hancock, communications coordinator with the Office of the Vice President for Research, will present how to communicate your graduate research or scholarly work to an audience who may not be experts in your field of study.
