New APDesign faculty member a champion at product design

"Friendly Dinosaurs"

Dinosaurs — friendly ones — have helped a Kansas State University College of Architecture, Planning & Design, or APDesign, faculty member win a national design competition.

Hernán Gregorio, an instructor of interior architecture & product design, is the grand prizewinner of the BOSEbuild Design Challenge for his project "Friendly Dinosaurs."

The international sound brand Bose, in collaboration with Instructables.com, challenged designers to test their 3-D modeling abilities by creating a custom enclosure for the BOSEbuild Speaker Cubes. The idea of this product is to teach children how speakers work and how they can make these speakers their own.

"My design created friendly dinosaur characters that reflect different moods and serve as a support for the speaker itself," Gregorio said. "It's a product that children and adults alike could enjoy."

Hernán, from Argentina, joined the APDesign faculty in August 2017. He has a degree in industrial design from Argentina's National University of Mar del Plata. His design interests cover a wide range, including modern furniture, smart devices, user interactions and user experience. His research focus is on 3-D digital design and fabrication.

"We are fortunate to have Hernán join our faculty," said Nathan Howe, head of the interior architecture & product design department. "His talents are on full display in this beautiful and playful product. It is this kind of creative spirit that we strive to instill into our students. The type of teaching that leads by example is another bonus for us all."

For his win, Hernán receives a special "Instructables" prize package from BOSE.
