Immerse yourself in the Beach Museum of Art on Sunday

Submitted by Martha Scott

The first admonition to most museum visitors is “don’t touch.” On Sunday, Oct. 30, visitors to the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art at Kansas State University will be encouraged to touch, smell and listen during a free Art Beyond Sight open house. The open house is 2–4 p.m.

Participants can experience art using multiple senses. Feel test samples of clay sculptures, examine small details in works of art, smell flowers or grasses from a painting, and hear descriptions of art.

There will also be hands-on activities with a variety of art media. Visitors will be able to use clay and experience what it feels like to draw with a variety of dry media including oil pastels, pastels, charcoal and prismacolor pencils.

“While visual art is most often experienced with your eyes, this open house will allow visitors to experience art in new ways,” said Kathrine Schlageck, the museum’s senior educator. “Touching sculpture, listening to descriptions and using magnifying devices will allow everyone to experience visual art in a new way.”

This event is in conjunction with the National Art Beyond Sight Awareness Month. The Beach Museum of Art is one of more than 200 organizations to host a special event. For more information on the project visit Art Beyond Sight’s Web page at www.artbeyondsight.org

Service animals are welcome and wheelchairs and walkers are available on request. Staff will be available to escort visitors with special needs.

The Beach Museum of Art is on the southeast corner of the K-State campus at 14th Street and Anderson Avenue.  Free visitor parking is available next to the building. Normal museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. The museum is closed Mondays. For more information call 785-532-7718 or visit the website.
