Engineering extension specialists receive measurement and verification professional certification

Submitted by David Carter

David Carter, director, and Ryan Hamel, energy specialist, both with the Engineering Extension Kansas Energy Program, recently achieved certification as measurement and verification professionals with the Association of Energy Engineers.

Carter and Hamel, previously certified as energy managers through the association, completed a four-hour, 107-question exam on the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol, which includes topics such as statistics, measurement and verification options, and developing measurement and verification plans.

Through Engineering Extension's recent partnership with the Kansas Corporation Commission, Carter and Hamel have conducted more than 31 energy assessments at rural small businesses in Kansas since January 2016.

"I am pleased with the certifications," said Bruce Snead, Engineering Extension head at Kansas State University. "Along with energy manager certification achieved by all staff in the Kansas Energy Program, this accomplishment enhances our department's ability to provide energy management services to the Kansas Corporation Commission and other Kansas organizations."

The International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol, first established by the U.S. Department of Energy, has become the internationally recognized protocol for performance measurement and verification. Protocol guidelines, built with the help of organizations from 16 countries and hundreds of individual experts from 25 nations, provides a consistent reliable approach to measurement and verification around the world.
