Hamilton to present in Prague at third biennial Performance Philosophy Conference

Submitted by Teresa Zerbe

James R. Hamilton, professor of philosophy, will present "Performance and Acting" as part of a panel on analytic philosophy and theatrical performance at the third biennial Performance Philosophy Conference June 22-25 in Prague, Czech Republic.

It has often been claimed that, whereas acting involves the portrayal of other people, performance involves portraying oneself and that, therefore, performance is more honest work than acting. Hamilton argues that distinction between performance and acting rests upon a flawed theory of both performance and acting. He demonstrates why that theory is flawed and offers an alternative theory that also does not have that consequence.
